Settlement Guide

Notes for shelter, food, production, and expedition flow based on the confirmed colony-sim premise.

Quick Answer

Settlement management is the backbone of Dungeon Settlers: rooms, bedrooms, dining areas, forge stations, crops, research, rations, and camping supplies all feed the expedition loop.

How To Use This

Build For The Next Trip

Treat settlement work as preparation for your next expedition. Pick one shortage, check the relevant recipe or building cost, and finish that improvement before spreading materials across several unfinished projects.

Protect The Basics

Food and shelter keep the settlement functioning; forge stations, research, rations, and camping supplies support dungeon progress. If one of those basics is failing, fix it before committing scarce materials to an upgrade that only pays off later.

Keep Daily Needs Close

Bedrooms, dining areas, storage, and production all belong to the same daily loop. Keep the buildings settlers use repeatedly easy to reach, and avoid filling every open tile before you understand how your current layout affects movement.

Reserve Supplies For Expeditions

Do not let settlement expansion consume every ration, camping supply, or crafting material. Decide what the next party needs first, reserve it, and spend the remainder on rooms, research, or production upgrades.

Use The New Batch Controls

In v0.4.23, editing one container can apply the same storage policy to all containers of that type. Crafting quantities can also be typed directly, while Shift-click changes the amount by 10. Use these controls to spend less time repeating settlement chores.

What Players Can Rely On

  • The Steam page explicitly references building a settlement in barren land.
  • The description mentions providing food and shelter for your people.
  • The public description mentions freely designing rooms with walls and doors.
  • Bedrooms, dining areas, anvils, smelters, fields, crops, rations, camping supplies, research, buildings, and equipment are mentioned publicly.
  • Patch v0.4.23 adds batch storage-policy edits, direct crafting quantities, and lower research work multipliers on higher combat difficulties.
  • Patch v0.4.29 fixes selected-dungeon environmental effects incorrectly changing settlement resource yields and extra item drops.

What Can Still Change

  • Best first buildings.
  • Worker assignment rules.
  • Production chains and upgrade dependencies.
  • How research changes the settlement build order.
  • Which supplies matter most before the first deep expedition.

Before Your Next Run

  • Choose the shortage you want the next building to solve.
  • Check its cost and dependencies before spending shared materials.
  • Keep food, shelter, crafting, and expedition supplies in balance.
  • Leave expansion room around production and storage until pathing rules are clearer.

FAQ

What should I build first in Dungeon Settlers?

There is no universal verified build order. Start with the shortage blocking food, shelter, or the next expedition, then finish that improvement before opening several competing projects.

Which settlement features are confirmed?

Steam names bedrooms, dining areas, walls and doors, anvils, smelters, crops, research, rations, camping supplies, and equipment as parts of the settlement loop.

Should I spend all materials on the settlement?

Keep enough equipment and expedition supplies for the party you plan to send. A larger base does not help if the next group cannot leave safely.
