Quick Answer

Give every available expedition member a clear job, pause when a charge attack or status effect appears, and leave before permanent death turns a weak run into a lasting setback. Patch v0.4.23 allows six members at Rank 2 and eight at Rank 3.

How To Use This

Prepare The Whole Party

Start with four clear jobs, then use the extra capacity unlocked at higher expedition ranks. Patch v0.4.23 raises the maximum to six members at Rank 2 and eight at Rank 3. Check that every added member has suitable skills, equipment, and supplies instead of filling slots without a plan.

Recheck Skills After The Archer Hotfix

Normal and Easy still reduce active-skill energy costs, while many stun and immobilize durations changed in v0.4.23. A follow-up patch then reverted several Archer reductions: Rapid Fire is back to 80% damage per hit at 3 energy, Arrow Rain to a 20-second cooldown, Sniping Shot to 180% base plus 30% per distance unit, and Sharp Shooter to 7% critical chance per completed kill-objective stage.

Pause For New Threats

Real-time pause is the safest moment to read the battlefield. Stop when you see a charge attack, a summon, or effects such as stun, bleed, burn, provoke, or vulnerable, then decide who needs protection and which enemy matters first.

Avoid Spreading Every Attack

Several damaged enemies can still use all of their abilities. Unless a control effect or positioning problem demands otherwise, removing one dangerous target often reduces incoming pressure faster than dividing damage across the room.

Respect Permanent Death

The official description says a dead member does not return. When a fight is deteriorating, compare the value of one more room or reward with the time and equipment invested in the party member at risk.

What Players Can Rely On

  • The Steam description references challenging combat below the settlement layer.
  • Steam describes real-time combat with pause and effects such as stun, bleed, burn, provoke, vulnerable, charge attacks, and summons.
  • Patch v0.4.23 reduces active-skill energy costs by 25% on Normal and 50% on Easy, and briefly reveals unseen enemies when they attack an ally.
  • Patch v0.4.29 keeps dungeon stay penalties across normal floor transitions and caps total barriers at 200% of maximum health.

What Can Still Change

  • Enemy types and damage patterns.
  • Formation rules and how larger Rank 2/3 expeditions change role balance.
  • Healing, retreat, and death penalties.

Before Your Next Run

  • Check every member's weapon, skills, health, and supplies before entering the dungeon.
  • Pause when a charge attack, summon, or dangerous status effect appears.
  • Focus the enemy creating the biggest immediate threat instead of spreading damage blindly.
  • Leave while the party can still survive the trip back; character death is permanent.
  • Check the transition warning for surviving members who would be left behind.

FAQ

Is Dungeon Settlers combat turn-based?

No. Steam describes combat as real-time with pause, so you can stop the action to inspect threats and issue decisions.

Which status effects are confirmed?

The official description mentions stun, bleed, burn, provoke, vulnerable, charge attacks, and summons. Exact values and enemy-specific counters can change during Early Access.

Can dead party members come back?

The Steam description says death is permanent. Treat a retreat that preserves an experienced member as a valid outcome, not automatically as a failed run.
