Build Planning
Best Builds
Build four dependable roles early, then use Rank 2 and Rank 3 expedition slots to reinforce the weak point in your party.
Quick Answer
For a beginner party, cover four needs: someone who can survive pressure, someone who can control threats, reliable damage, and recovery or support. Build those jobs from the recruits and Major Trait skill trees in your save; this is a role framework, not a universal tier list.

How To Use This
Safe Build Rule
A good beginner build should survive mistakes. Until exact numbers are known, favor roles that keep members alive, control threats, and make short dungeon trips repeatable.
Four Core Jobs, Then Expand
Cover frontline survival, control, reliable damage, and recovery first. At Rank 2 and Rank 3, v0.4.23 lets expeditions grow to six and eight members. Use those slots to solve a demonstrated weakness rather than adding bodies without equipment or supplies.
Skill Trees
Steam uses sword, mace, bow, and fire magic as examples of character options. Treat them as possible combat paths, then check the actual Major Trait, Sub Trait, equipment, and available skills on the recruit in your current build.
Improve One Slot At A Time
After a difficult fight, identify the job that failed: frontline survival, control, damage, or recovery. Adjust that member's equipment, positioning, or skill use first. Replacing the entire party makes it harder to learn which change actually helped.
What Players Can Rely On
- Patch v0.4.23 raises maximum expedition size to six members at Rank 2 and eight at Rank 3.
- Members have equipment, skills, traits, abilities, talents, and life stats.
- Sword, mace, bow, and fire magic are named as example skill trees.
- Combat effects named publicly include stun, bleed, burn, provoke, vulnerable, charge attacks, and summons.
What Can Still Change
- Formal class names and whether skill trees define builds.
- Best first defensive, control, damage, and support options.
- Trait and background effects that change build value.
- Balance changes during Early Access.
- Archer balance after the post-v0.4.23 rollback.
Before Your Next Run
- Give every party member one primary job you can explain.
- Check that Major Traits and equipment support that job.
- Bring both a way to survive pressure and a way to control dangerous enemies.
- Change one weak link after a failed fight instead of rebuilding the whole party.

What is the best build in Dungeon Settlers?
The exact best build is not confirmed. Start with four role needs: survivability, control, damage, and recovery. At higher ranks, use the additional expedition slots to reinforce whichever need is failing in your save.
Are sword, mace, bow, and fire magic confirmed?
They are named publicly as example skill trees on Steam. Their exact launch behavior still needs verification.
Is there a verified tier list?
Not yet. Early Access balance can move, and recruits depend on their available traits and trees. Use the role framework above instead of treating an unsupported ranking as universal.
